Proclamation, 1860 May 18.

The proclamation orders the exclusion of Northern Indians from Washington Territory. Indians from British Columbia has been entering Puget Sound and robbing settlers.

Richard Dickerson Gholson was born near Culpeper, Va., in Jan. 1802. He was educated in Virginia, moved with his parents to Kentucky when a young man, and there he studied law. He served in the Mexican War (1846-1848). Gholson was an ardent supporter of James Buchanan, stumping the state of Kentucky for him in his presidential campaign. When Buchanan was elected, Gholson was rewarded with the governorship of Washington Territory. Gholson arrived in the territory early in July 1859. ...
